About earthquakes
Earthquakes are the results of plate tectonics. (See the Plate Tectonics page) In an earthquake, elastic strain energy is released and waves radiate, shaking the ground. Scientist can predict when major earthquakes are going to happen, sometimes but not all the time. The west coast is known for having the most earthquakes, but there are 48 states that are at high risks.Earthquakes involve the powerful movement of rocks in the Earth’s crust. The rapid release of energy creates seismic waves that travel through the earth.
